Description
This dataset contains the first occurrence records of Achalinus hunanensis from Guangxi, China, documented in 2023.
Specimens were collected by hand in forested montane areas of northern Guangxi and subsequently preserved in 75 % ethanol. Species identification followed Ma et al. (2024). Geographic coordinates were recorded using GPS with an accuracy of 5–10 m.
Data are published under CC0 1.0 to facilitate biodiversity research, conservation planning and ecological modelling.
Data Records
The data in this occurrence resource has been published as a Darwin Core Archive (DwC-A), which is a standardized format for sharing biodiversity data as a set of one or more data tables. The core data table contains 3 records.
This IPT archives the data and thus serves as the data repository. The data and resource metadata are available for download in the downloads section. The versions table lists other versions of the resource that have been made publicly available and allows tracking changes made to the resource over time.
Versions
The table below shows only published versions of the resource that are publicly accessible.

Sampling Methods
Targeted visual encounter surveys along footpaths and stream transects. Animals were detected by eye, captured by hand and euthanised in accordance with animal-ethics permit GXNU-HERP-2024-08. Tissue samples (liver or muscle) were taken and stored in 95 % ethanol; whole specimens were fixed in 10 % formalin for 24 h and subsequently transferred to 75 % ethanol for long-term storage. Geographic coordinates were recorded using a Garmin GPSMAP 66s with 5 m accuracy; elevation was read from GPS barometer.
| Study Extent | Field work was carried out in montane evergreen forests of northern Guangxi, China, between 25.2–25.5 °N and 108.6–109.2 °E, at elevations of 890–1 280 m a.s.l. Surveys were conducted on 28 August, 30 August and 15 October 2024. |

Method step description:

Species identity was verified against the original description of Achalinus hunanensis (Ma et al., 2023). GPS coordinates were cross-checked with Google Earth imagery; obvious outliers (> 1 km from survey roads) were revisited or discarded. All records were entered into Excel with double-key validation and imported to IPT with Darwin Core mapping checks.

| Purpose | This dataset publishes the first occurrence records of Achalinus hunanensis from Guangxi, China, filling a distribution gap for the species. The data support the morphological identification and phylogenetic placement presented in the accompanying manuscript. By making these occurrences openly available, we aim to facilitate future biogeographic, ecological and conservation assessments of this narrowly endemic snake. |
