Description

This dataset comprises 239 occurrence records of 105 taxa of wild bees and apoid wasps (Hymenoptera: Apoidea; families Andrenidae, Apidae, Colletidae, Crabronidae, Halictidae, Megachilidae) and hoverflies (Diptera: Syrphidae), sampled at 24 sites across Aspromonte National Park, Calabria region, southern Italy, between June and August 2020. Sampling combined UV-reflective pan traps (white, yellow, blue), Malaise traps at two sites, and active hand-netting. Species identification combined morphological examination with COX1 barcode sequencing. This dataset supports the analyses presented in Cerini et al. 2026. Pollinators (Apoidea and Syrphidae) Diversity of the Aspromonte National Park (Southern Italy): from hotspot to darkspot, and back. Nature Conservation. Accepted, to be published.

Data Records

The data in this occurrence resource has been published as a Darwin Core Archive (DwC-A), which is a standardized format for sharing biodiversity data as a set of one or more data tables. The core data table contains 239 records.

This IPT archives the data and thus serves as the data repository. The data and resource metadata are available for download in the downloads section. The versions table lists other versions of the resource that have been made publicly available and allows tracking changes made to the resource over time.

Sampling Methods

Sampling was conducted at 24 sites selected via GIS analysis to represent the environmental heterogeneity of Aspromonte National Park (broadleaf and conifer forests, old-growth forests, former agricultural lands, grazed fallows, and clearings), covering an elevation range of 580–1865 m a.s.l. At 18 sites, three UV-reflective pan traps (white, yellow, blue; ~150 cl capacity) were mounted at ~150 cm height. At two of these sites, pan traps were supplemented with a Malaise trap and left active for a longer period, checked fortnightly. The remaining four sites were sampled opportunistically through active hand-netting only, without traps. Active sampling with entomological nets was additionally carried out at all sites by two operators during trap installation, visits, and dismissal, between 08:00 and 17:00 under sunny, low-wind conditions. Collected specimens were preserved in 96% ethanol.

Study Extent Aspromonte National Park (Calabria, Italy). Sampling activity from June to August with weekly visits to the traps.

Method step description:

  1. Taxonomic identification combined morphological examination with COX1 mitochondrial barcode sequencing, cross-checked against BLAST/BOLD databases.
