Description

This dataset contains 832 occurrence records of 143 butterfly species (Lepidoptera: Papilionoidea) collected along a continuous elevational gradient from the coastal Çukurova plain to the subalpine belt of the southern Bolkar Mountains, Mersin Province, southern Türkiye. Records were obtained during 71 sampling events on 58 dates between 2016 and 2024, in the districts of Toroslar, Çamlıyayla, Tarsus and Akdeniz, spanning 2 to 2200 m a.s.l. Butterflies were surveyed by whole-day active searching and hand netting, and every species is represented by voucher material deposited in the entomological collection of the Department of Biology, Mersin University (ENTOLAB). Thirteen sampling events fall within the Cehennem Deresi and Kadıncık Vadisi Wildlife Development Areas and are flagged accordingly. Records of taxa that cannot be separated reliably on external characters, namely the genera Polyommatus (except P. icarus), Kretania and Pyrgus, are flagged as provisional in the identificationRemarks field and require confirmation by genitalic, karyological or molecular examination. Twenty-seven of the 143 species are so treated.

Data Records

The data in this occurrence resource has been published as a Darwin Core Archive (DwC-A), which is a standardized format for sharing biodiversity data as a set of one or more data tables. The core data table contains 832 records.

This IPT archives the data and thus serves as the data repository. The data and resource metadata are available for download in the downloads section. The versions table lists other versions of the resource that have been made publicly available and allows tracking changes made to the resource over time.

Versions

The table below shows only published versions of the resource that are publicly accessible.

Sampling Methods

Each sampling event consisted of a single day's survey of one locality, beginning in the early morning and continuing until the late afternoon, covering all accessible microhabitats. Survey duration was not held constant, so records are presented as species incidences rather than abundances. Coordinates were recorded with a Garmin GPSMAP 64sx receiver (nominal accuracy 5 m).

Study Extent Seventy-one sampling events at localities distributed along a continuous elevational transect from 2 to 2200 m a.s.l., on 58 dates between 2016 and 2024. Sampling covered March to November, with greatest effort in May and July. Thirteen events fall within the Cehennem Deresi and Kadincik Vadisi Wildlife Development Areas.
Quality Control Every species is represented by voucher material deposited in ENTOLAB and available for re-examination. Genitalic dissection was not undertaken; records of the genera Polyommatus (except P. icarus), Kretania and Pyrgus are flagged as provisional in identificationRemarks and require confirmation by genitalic, karyological or molecular examination. Twenty-seven of the 143 species are so treated. Coordinates were checked for arithmetic validity and against district boundaries.

Method step description:

  1. Field sampling by whole-day active searching and hand netting with an aerial net, under warm, sunny and calm conditions.
  2. Laboratory preparation: specimens killed in ethyl acetate, pinned, set with wings spread, dried and labelled.
  3. Identification under an Olympus SZ51 stereomicroscope, following Hesselbarth et al. (1995) as regional reference and Wiemers et al. (2018) for nomenclature.
  4. Transcription of label data into a Darwin Core occurrence table.
