Description

This dataset provides bird occurrence records from Karataş Lake (Burdur, Türkiye), an important wetland ecosystem. Data were collected through systematic field observations across different seasons. The dataset includes taxonomic identification of bird species, geographic coordinates, observation dates, and individual counts. The primary objective of this dataset is to investigate the ecological relationships between bird diversity and environmental variables, particularly vegetation dynamics represented by NDVI. The dataset supports biodiversity assessments, ecological modelling, and conservation efforts in wetland habitats.

Data Records

The data in this occurrence resource has been published as a Darwin Core Archive (DwC-A), which is a standardized format for sharing biodiversity data as a set of one or more data tables. The core data table contains 63 records.

This IPT archives the data and thus serves as the data repository. The data and resource metadata are available for download in the downloads section. The versions table lists other versions of the resource that have been made publicly available and allows tracking changes made to the resource over time.

Geographic Coverage

Karataş Lake, located in Burdur Province in southwestern Türkiye, is an ecologically important freshwater wetland ecosystem situated within the Lakes Region. The study area covers the lake and its surrounding habitats, which support diverse avifauna and play a significant role in regional biodiversity. The area is characterized by seasonal hydrological changes and dynamic vegetation patterns, making it particularly suitable for analysing the relationships between bird diversity and environmental variables such as NDVI.

Sampling Methods

Bird observations were carried out through direct field surveys during different seasons. Standard ornithological observation techniques were used, including visual identification with binoculars and field guides. Bird observations have been conducted using two primary methods to understand the biological diversity of wetland habitats: line transects and point counts (Dobinson 1976, Bibby et al. 1992a, Bibby et al. 1992b). The Line Transect method is used to determine bird movement and distribution across large areas, whereas the Point Count method is preferred for identifying species diversity and individual numbers at specific points. For each observation, species identification, number of individuals, observation date, and geographic coordinates were recorded. The dataset represents presence-only (occurrence) data and does not include absence records. The sampling approach aimed to capture seasonal variation in bird diversity and distribution.

Study Extent The study was conducted at Karataş Lake and its surrounding wetland habitats located in Burdur Province, southwestern Türkiye. The area is part of the Lakes Region (Göller Yöresi) and represents an important freshwater ecosystem supporting diverse bird species. The study covers seasonal observations within the wetland.
Quality Control Data quality was ensured through careful species identification using standard field guides and observation techniques. Geographic coordinates were recorded using GPS devices and verified for accuracy. Taxonomic names were standardized according to accepted scientific nomenclature. Data were checked for consistency, completeness, and formatting before being converted into Darwin Core standards.

Method step description:

  1. Field data were collected during seasonal surveys and recorded in tabular format. Geographic coordinates were converted into decimal degrees (WGS84). The dataset was cleaned by removing incomplete and duplicate records. Taxonomic names and metadata were standardized according to Darwin Core terms. The final dataset was prepared for publication using the GBIF Integrated Publishing Toolkit (IPT).

Additional Metadata

Introduction Wetland ecosystems are among the most productive and ecologically important habitats, supporting high levels of biodiversity, particularly bird species. The Lakes Region (Göller Yöresi) in southwestern Türkiye hosts numerous freshwater ecosystems that play a critical role in sustaining avifauna and maintaining ecological balance. However, these ecosystems are increasingly affected by environmental changes, including climate variability, land use change, and water level fluctuations. Karataş Lake represents one of the important wetland habitats within this region. Understanding the relationship between bird diversity and environmental factors is essential for biodiversity conservation and ecosystem management. Remote sensing techniques, such as the use of NDVI (Normalized Difference Vegetation Index), provide valuable insights into vegetation dynamics and habitat conditions. This dataset was developed to support the investigation of ecological relationships between bird occurrence and environmental variables. It provides baseline data that can be used in biodiversity assessments, ecological modelling, and conservation planning, as well as in future studies focusing on wetland ecosystems.
Getting Started The dataset consists of bird occurrence records collected from Karataş Lake and its surrounding habitats. Each record represents an individual observation and includes information such as scientific name, geographic coordinates (decimal latitude and longitude), observation date, and individual count. The data are structured according to Darwin Core standards and organized in a tabular format suitable for biodiversity data sharing platforms such as GBIF. The dataset can be used for ecological analysis, species distribution studies, and assessments of the relationship between bird diversity and environmental variables such as NDVI. Users can integrate this dataset with other environmental or spatial datasets for advanced ecological modelling and conservation research.
Purpose The purpose of this dataset is to document bird occurrence records from Karataş Lake (Burdur, Türkiye) and to support the analysis of ecological relationships between bird diversity and environmental variables. The dataset aims to contribute to understanding how seasonal changes and vegetation dynamics, particularly as represented by NDVI, influence the distribution and abundance of bird species in wetland ecosystems. Additionally, the dataset is intended to support biodiversity monitoring, ecological research, and conservation planning in the Lakes Region (Göller Yöresi), providing a valuable resource for future studies and environmental management efforts.
