Description
Data Records
The data in this occurrence resource has been published as a Darwin Core Archive (DwC-A), which is a standardized format for sharing biodiversity data as a set of one or more data tables. The core data table contains 226 records.
This IPT archives the data and thus serves as the data repository. The data and resource metadata are available for download in the downloads section. The versions table lists other versions of the resource that have been made publicly available and allows tracking changes made to the resource over time.

Project Data
This project was carried out by the National Institute of the Atlantic Forest (INMA) as part of ongoing research on the vascular flora of Brazilian inselbergs. Its main objective was to document the vascular plant diversity of the Pedra do Cabrito inselberg through botanical surveys, specimen collection, taxonomic identification, and the preparation of georeferenced occurrence records to support biodiversity research and conservation.
| Title | Vascular flora inventory of a complex of neglected inselbergs in southern Espírito Santo |
|---|---|
| Funding | This project was supported by the Instituto Nacional da Mata Atlântica (INMA) and the Conselho Nacional de Desenvolvimento Científico e Tecnológico (CNPq) through the CNPq PCI Program. |
| Study Area Description | The study was conducted at Pedra do Cabrito, a granitic inselberg located in the municipality of Castelo, Espírito Santo State, southeastern Brazil, within the Atlantic Forest domain. The area is characterized by exposed granite outcrops and associated rocky vegetation, supporting a highly diverse vascular flora. |
| Design Description | The project aimed to document the vascular flora of Pedra do Cabrito through field surveys, specimen collection, herbarium studies, and taxonomic identification. Occurrence records were georeferenced and standardized according to the Darwin Core standard to facilitate data sharing through GBIF. |

Sampling Methods
Eight field expeditions were conducted between May 2023 and September 2025, comprising approximately 16 field days. All accessible sectors of the inselberg were surveyed, including Herbaceous Vegetation Islands and Woody Vegetation. The field inventory was supplemented with 43 specimen records retrieved through SpeciesLink/CRIA. Reflora was used to examine digitized specimens and assist with taxonomic verification.
| Study Extent | The study area comprises the Pedra do Cabrito inselberg, located on the border between the municipalities of Castelo and Cachoeiro de Itapemirim, Espírito Santo State, southeastern Brazil, within the Atlantic Forest domain. The area consists of a granitic inselberg characterized by exposed rock surfaces, herbaceous vegetation islands, rock crevices, woody vegetation patches, and surrounding seasonal semideciduous forest. Elevation ranges from approximately 275 to 1,150 m above sea level. According to the Köppen-Geiger classification, the study area has a Cfb climate, characterized as temperate and humid, without a dry season and with warm summers. |

Method step description:
- Recorded species were classified by life form as trees, shrubs, subshrubs, climbers, or herbaceous plants. They were also categorized according to ecological habit as terrestrial, epiphytic, or rupicolous, the latter defined broadly to include saxicolous species, i.e., all taxa occurring on rock substrates, either rooted in shallow soil pockets or directly on exposed rock surfaces. Collected specimens were processed following standard herbarium techniques (Mori et al. 1989) and deposited at the MBML herbarium with duplicates to be distributed to RB, CESJ, and VIES. Acronyms follow the Index Herbariorum (Thiers 2026). Additionally, the species list was supplemented with records from online databases (Reflora 2026 and CRIA 2026).
Additional Metadata
| Introduction | Granitic inselbergs are isolated rocky outcrops that harbor unique plant communities with high levels of endemism and species richness, making them important targets for biodiversity conservation. Pedra do Cabrito, located in the municipality of Castelo, Espírito Santo State, southeastern Brazil, is one of these inselbergs within the Atlantic Forest domain. This dataset provides georeferenced occurrence records of vascular plants documented through field surveys and herbarium specimens, contributing to the knowledge of the floristic composition of this poorly documented ecosystem and supporting biodiversity research and conservation initiatives. |

| Purpose | This dataset was compiled to document the vascular flora of the Pedra do Cabrito inselberg, Espírito Santo State, Brazil. It provides georeferenced occurrence records based on field collections and herbarium specimens, aiming to support taxonomic, floristic, biogeographical and conservation studies, as well as to promote the availability and reuse of biodiversity data through the GBIF network. |
