Données sur le projet
This project present a review of the grasshopper genus Pteropera, with description of three new species. In the project, the authors also present the complete list of species of Pteropera and the preliminary phylogeny of the genus.
Titre | Taxonomic review of the grasshopper genus Pteropera Karsch, 1891 (Orthoptera, Acrididea, Catantopinae) with description of three new species and a preliminary phylogeny of the Cameroonian species. |

Financement | The project was financially supported by the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation. The Orthopterists´ Society provided additional funding for sequencing genomics through the Theodore J. Cohn research grant 2023. This work also received support from the Linnean Society and the Systematics Association through LineSys: Systematic Research Fund grant 2023. |
Description du domaine d'étude / de recherche | African rainforests |
Description du design | The project provides a taxonomic review of the Afrotropical Catantopine grasshopper genus Pteropera, describe three species new to science and provide the first molecular data of the genus. Given the lack of certain taxonomic data and the unavailability of molecular data of the genus Pteropera, there was a great need to shed light on the taxonomic status of grasshopper species belonging to this genus through an integrative approach, including morphometrics, morphology and molecular analysis. The project also presents an updated the identification key to species, maps of the distribution of all known species, the first phylogenetic tree for the genus. |
Les personnes impliquées dans le projet:
Méthodes d'échantillonnage
Field surveys were conducted from June 2017 to April 2022 at various locations situated in the central(Ongot), eastern (Somalomo, Dja) and littoral (Sohock, Koukoué, Iboti) regions of Cameroon. The grasshopper samples were collected using sweep nets and hand catches.
Etendue de l'étude | The samples considered in the project were collected in several African Rainforest countries including Angola, Cameroon, Central African Republic, Congo-Brazzaville, Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), Equatorial Guinea, Fernando Poo and Gabon. |
---|---|
Contrôle qualité | Collected samples were identified using the identification keys. In addition, type specimens held in the Muséum Nationale d´Histoire Naturelle Paris, France (MNHN) and the Museum für Naturkunde Berlin, Germany (MfN) were examined and the distributional data were recorded. Fresh samples were stored in absolute ethanol for further DNA analysis. They are kept as vouchers in the entomological collection at the Staatliches Museum für Naturkunde Karlsruhe, Germany (SMNK). |
Description des étapes de la méthode:
- Distributional data were obtained from geographical coordinates recorded during field observations and from locality records taken from specimen labels in the Zoologisches Museum Hamburg (ZMH) and the Muséum National d´Histoire Naturelle Paris (MNHN) collections. The distribution maps of all the species were generated via QGIS 3.28.3 ´´Firenze´´ (2023).
