A dataset of true mangrove records in Sarangani Bay Protected Seascape, Philippines
The Sarangani Bay Protected Seascape (SBPS) is located in the southern part of Mindanao, Philippines, bordered by Sarangani Province and General Santos City. It is home to a large number of mangrove species, which mostly form narrow fringes and patches of mangrove forests parallel to the shoreline in rocky, sandy, or riverine areas. This resource contains 152 occurrence records of 22 true mangrove species in SBPS.
Data Records
The data in this occurrence resource has been published as a Darwin Core Archive (DwC-A), which is a standardized format for sharing biodiversity data as a set of one or more data tables. The core data table contains 152 records.
This IPT archives the data and thus serves as the data repository. The data and resource metadata are available for download in the downloads section. The versions table lists other versions of the resource that have been made publicly available and allows tracking changes made to the resource over time.

Agduma. |
Study Area Description | The SBPS is located between 5o33’25” and 6o6’15” N and 124o22’45” and 125o19’45” E in the southmost part of Mindanao, Philippines. It is bordered by Sarangani Province and General Santos City. The seascape has a total area of 215, 950 ha and a coastline of 218.18 km. Its climate is influenced by the northeast monsoon from November to March and the southwest monsoon from June to October. It has a mean annual precipitation of 960 mm which is evenly distributed throughout the year. Its mean annual temperature is 27.85 °C, with a mean annual relative air humidity of 79.38%. |
Design Description | The goal of this project was to database true mangrove species in Sarangani Bay Protected Seascape (SBPS), Philippines. Mangrove species observed along the coast of SBPS were noted and location coordinates were recorded. |
The personnel involved in the project:
Sampling Methods
A complete census of true mangrove species at known mangrove sites along the coast of SBPS was done and location coordinates were recorded.
Study Extent | The field surveys were carried out from 2018 to 2022 in seven coastal towns and cities (Glan, Malapatan, Alabel, Maasim, Kiamba, Maitum, and General Santos), bordering the Sarangani Bay Protected Seascape, in the Mindanao Islands, Philippines. |
---|---|
Quality Control | Only true mangroves following the classification of Primavera et al. (2016) based on the criteria of Wang et al. (2011) were included in the dataset. From this general list, we created the true mangrove list for SBPS. All the scientific names of mangrove samples were validated using Primavera et al. (2016). |
Method step description:
- 1. Field survey from 2018-2022 along the coast of Sarangani Bay Protected Seascape. 2. All true mangrove species were documented and their locations were recorded. 3. Scientific names of mangroves were validated.
